Asking the Holy Spirit "why"

It's shocking to find out what really motivates us and it's hard work to replace those motives. Thus, we ought to get divine help. A good way to do this is by inviting the Holy Spirit into the daily activity of your life and asking Him to reveal why you do what you do  (especially try this during emotional peaks).

When I do this I realize how often I revere the approval of people, am driven by shame or fueled by the need to earn right-standing with God.

But thanks be to Him who has the power to rearrange our soul's motivation. We can repeatedly surrender what is inside us and He can transform us into beautiful, Christ-like creatures.
